A Past Announcement for the Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of MHSS (the official annual membership meeting of the Mennonite Historical Society of Saskatchewan) will be held Friday evening, March 7 and Saturday, March 8, at Osler Mennonite Church in Osler SK. On the Home page of this mhss website there is a map in the lower portion. If you click twice on the minus (-) sign in the upper left hand portion of the map Osler can be located on Highway 11 north of Saskatoon.

The focus of the 2 day sessions will be the Low German Language that we call Plautdietsch on the prairies. A forwarding page link may be added as more information is available and a poster that can be printed as either a bulletin insert or one that can be photo-copier enlarged to post.

Resource people will include one of Canada's experts on Plautdietsch, Jack Thiessen of Manitoba; if you have a high speed web connection check page 23: plettfoundation.org/Preservings/ (search there). Chris Cox of Warman SK, now studying in Edmonton on a graduate degree will also be present to participate..

On Friday night beginning at 7:30 pm there will be singing for about 30 minutes by Hank and Anne Neufeld from McGregor, Manitoba. They will do light/humorous and sacred Low German selections. They will be augmented by the Osler Joy Quartet singers. Jack Thiessen will give his first lecture and tell Low German stories.

On Saturday morning, Jack Thiessen will give his second talk and the Neufeld duo will perform again.

Lunch will be available on Saturday.

The afternoon will include the actual AGM sessions.

Transportation: A bus will go from Bethany Manor in Saskatoon. Please phone Anne Bueckert at 306 249 0442 for a place. On Friday the bus will leave Bethany Manor at 6:45 p.m. and return immediately after the event. On Saturday the bus will leave at 8:45 a.m. and return at 3:00 p.m. We expect the fare to be under $10.00 return for Friday and also under $10.00 return on Saturday.

What if you cannot speak Low German? This is also for you. Some of what is said will be in English. There will be explanation in English about the language. There will also be stories and poetry in Low German. You will learn why this language is so beautiful and expressive.

For purchase: We will have books on Mennonite history, maps, and much more. Cost: by donation for which you can get a tax deductible receipt. We are starting to raise funds to expand the archives at Bethany Manor.

Mennonite Plautdietsch and Language and History
As part of the Annual General Meeting weekend of the M.H.S.S. the theme was our language, Plautdietsch. Chris Cox, studying at the university in Edmonton, had prepared his research into a fine powerpoint presentation. We offer it here with his permission for those who were not able to attend.
