Language and Community
In his book “The Empires of the Word,” Nicholas Ostler once wrote: “If language is what makes us human, it is languages that make us superhuman.”
- That is, languages connect us to one another and to an unbroken chain of speakers which proceeds back into prehistory - a living record of the collective experiences of community captured in words and phrases handed down, from parent to child, for hundreds and thousands of years
