Mennonite Low German Abroad
Whether in Siberia or Central America, Plautdietsch is still spoken, and despite influence from other languages, remains essentially the same:
- The “miracle,” then, is that Plautdietsch has survived and expanded over hundreds of years under circumstances where few other languages have succeeded - in relative isolation from their closest linguistic kin
- All other varieties of Lower Prussian Low German, once the majority of speakers, have either disappeared or are likely to disappear within this generation - Plautdietsch is the last surviving representative of this language group
