For those Mennonites who emigrated to North America, the situation with early borrowings from English was similar to that with early borrowings from Russian:
- Generally words from outside of hearth and home, mostly dealing with commerce and technology
- With introduction of English-language education and increased rates of bilingualism, borrowings gradually took on a more informal, spontaneous character
