Low German: the language group within Germanic to which Plautdietsch belongs
- Historically spoken in the area of continental Europe near the North and Baltic Seas
- Demographically and linguistically important group - estimated eight million speakers today across Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands (Epp 1993: 103-4)
